MATH 566 Numerical Analysis II

Numerical Analysis, 8th edition, by R.L. Burden and J.D. Faires, Thomson Brooks/Cole, ISBN: 0-534-39200-8.  We will cover Chapters 5, 7, 11, and 12.

GRADING SCHEME:

• Homework (40%) - Most homework assignments are in the textbook and due dates are shown on the attached calendar .  Homework solutions must be complete, coherent, and self-contained.  There are solutions in the back of the book and a students solution manual, thus you must clearly show all of your work.   Poorly presented work will be penalized.

Late Homework Policy:   Homework should be turned in on the date it is due, and unless there are extenuating circumstances, there is a 10% per day late penalty.

Collaboration Policy:   Students may collaborate on homework questions however, once you begin writing the version that you will submit, you may no longer collaborate on that problem.   In particular, each student will turn in their own work, use their own computer programs and there will be a penalty if students turn in the same work.

Programming:  Many of the homework problems should be done on a computer, and you may use any programming language.  I recommend Matlab  which you will have access to on the computers in MG 104.

• Exams (30%) - There will be two exams: March 11 and May 1.  Make-up of exams is not allowed unless there are documented emergencies.
• Project (30%) -  Projects consist of: (1) proposal due April 1, (2) one page typed progress report due April 22, (3) presentations the week of  May 4, and (4) final report due May 12 at 5pm.  You  will choose a topic to study, and I suggest it be in your research area if applicable.  Please discuss potential projects with me before the proposals are due April 1.
