CLASS MEETINGS: 3:15-4:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays in room MG 120.

TEXT: Scientific Computing and Differential Equations, An Introduction to Numerical Methods by Golub and Ortega.

GRADING SCHEME: Your grade will be determined by:

Homework (35%) - There will be approximately 7 homework assignments which will be a combination of theory and computer programming. Collaborative work is not allowed.
Midterm (30%) - This will be taken in-class and collaborative work is not allowed. Make-ups are also not allowed, unless there are physician documented health reasons or other documented family difficulties.
Final Project (35%) - Undergraduate students may work together in groups of two or three people, and graduate students will be required to work alone on a project in their research area. A proposal and progress report will be part of the grade. The projects will be due at the last day of classes.

Your total score must be at least 90% for an A, 80% for a B, 70% for a C, and 60% for a D.

COMPUTER ASSIGNMENTS: You are encouraged to use Matlab for the computing part of the assignments. Basic instruction on how to program in Matlab will be given during the first week of classes. You will be given an account on the computers in MG 104. Matlab is also available in the Engineering computer lab (ET 212/239) and the Multipurpose Classroom Facility (MP 121). You may purchase the student version of Matlab for $99 from the bookstore or directly from The MathWorks .

GRADUATE STUDENTS: Graduate students will be held to a higher standard than undergraduate students. This includes more challenging homework assignments and examinations.
