GRADING SCHEME:

Math 465/565

• Homework (40%) - Homework assignments are in the textbook and due dates are shown on the attached calendar .  Homework solutions must be complete, coherent, and self-contained.  There are solutions in the back of the book and a students solution manual, thus you must clearly show all of your work.   Poorly presented work will be penalized.

Late Homework Policy:   Homework should be turned in on the date it is due, and unless there are extenuating circumstances, there is a 10% per day late penalty.

Collaboration Policy:   Students may collaborate on homework questions however, once you begin writing the version that you will submit, you may no longer collaborate on that problem.   In particular, each student will turn in their own work, use their own computer programs and there will be a penalty if students turn in the same work.

Programming:  Many of the homework problems should be done on a computer, and you may use any programming language.  We will have a basic introduction to Matlab, and you will have access to it on the computers in MG 104.

• Exams (40%) - There will be two exams: October 1 and October 31.  Make-up of exams is not allowed unless there are documented emergencies.
• Final (20%) - The final is Wednesday December 17 10:30-12:30 in our regular classroom, and will emphasize Chapters 6 and 7.

Math 565

• Homework - Students enrolled in 565 will receive more challenging homework assignments than those in 465.
• Exams and Final - Students enrolled in 565 will have more challenging exams questions than those in 465.
• Project - Students enrolled in 565 must complete a final project.  Projects can be done singly or in groups of 2 or 3 and will consist of: (1) proposal due November 5, (2) one page typed progress report due November 21, (3) presentation December 10, and (4) final report due December 12.  You or your group will choose a topic to study, and I suggest it be in your research area if applicable.  Please discuss potential projects with me before the proposals are due November 5.  The project will be worth an additional 25% of your grade.
