MATHEMATICAL MODELING

CLASS MEETINGS: 1:40-2:30 MWF
in room MG 120. Thursday August 30 we will meet
at the computer lab in the
Simplot/Micron Technology Center (SMITC) Room 209.
TEXT:
A Course in Mathematical Modeling
by Mooney and Swift, Chapters 1-4.
SUPPLEMENTAL TEXT: Inverse Problems
by Groetsch. I will supply copies of
appropriate chapters.
GRADING SCHEME: Your grade will be determined by:

Homework (20%) - In general, homework will be collected
for each Chapter. The attached schedule shows the
tentative dates that homework will be collected.
You are encouraged to
collaborate with others, but you must hand in your own paper.
- Group Project (15%) -
Projects will be assigned to groups of
two or three, and are due November 19. On that date, groups will
also give a presentation of their work.
Progress reports are due November 5.
- Midterm (20%) - This will be taken in-class October
15. Collaborative work is not allowed.
Make-ups are also not allowed, unless
there are physician documented health reasons or other documented
family difficulties.
- Individual Project (20%) - These are due December 12, and
each student will give a presentation of their work
December 12 or 13. Progress reports are due November 29.
- Final (25%) -
The final is scheduled for Wednesday December 19,
from 1:00-3:00
in our regular classrooms. Again, collaborative work is not
allowed, nor
is it possible to
make up or re-schedule the final.
