Differentiation and scalar-valued functions of several variables.
This module develops the calculus for functions whose values are scalars, but their domains consist of several (up to three in this course) independent ``variables". The notion of differentiation (calculating rates of change depending on several independent variables) over parts of a two-dimensional domain is explored in this more general context. The central notion of the gradient of such a function emerges. Emphasis is on the relation of mathematical technique to solution of engineering problems. This module will be delivered during eight lecture meetings and three ENGR 397 meetings over three weeks. A final test will be administered on the last day dedicated to this module. The relevant textbook material is from parts of Ch. 10, 11 and 12.
