- Consider the system on page 213 of our text
book. Carry out the following
- Compute the inverse of the coefficient
matrix. Show the steps for any by-hand
method you use.
- Show a by-hand check that your inverse
is correct.
- Write the system's solution using the
inverse you've calculated ("TI-81 method").
- Attempt to carry out the above steps for the
system whose coefficient matrix is the
matrix at the top of page 243 and whose
right-hand-side column is the vector
x3
in the middle of page 244.
- For whatever by-hand inverse-finding method
you choose, show the steps and explain
briefly what intermediate result
tipped you off that no inverse exists.
- Nevertheless, write the systems's
solution.

This assumes you know a little bit
about matrix multiplication (covered in sections
1-9).
Attain some familiarity and competence with this
method by using it to find the intersections of
pairs of non-parallel oblique lines.
