Posted: Tue Feb 6 11:32:03 MST 2007
The following are not assigned, but should be looked into: 1.9: 13-21 on computing inverses via row operations and 1.9: 29-34.

Assignment #5 (Due Tuesday, 2/6/07)
Posted: Fri Feb 2 13:53:06 MST 2007
Nice writeups, like with prose, and appeals to definitions.

Assignment #4 (Due Tuesday, 1/30/07)

Just computations, no proofs this time. Hand in: If you aren't already matrix fluent, I recommend you work through the odds, 1.5: 1-39 (and 34). But don't hand them in.

Rubric for Problem 7, Assignment #1
Posted: Thu Jan 18 12:05:51 MST 2007
This rubric shows what I looked for in grading problem 7:
 DesideratumPoints
1Variables Defined10
2Weight Equation10
3Length Equation10
4Solve Equations20
5Announce (ICPA)10
Total60
When you define a variable, you need to give the name, attribute, and units:
"Let x = the number of Nickels" rather than "Let x = Nickels";
and
"Let t = the tomato temperature in degrees fahrenheit" rather than "Let t = Tomatoes".

Assignment #2 (Due Friday, 1/19/07)
Posted: Wed Jan 17 13:48:41 MST 2007
Study Examples Added: Thu Jan 18 14:33:43 MST 2007
Become a slick practitioner of EROs and endgame interpretation so's we can have a 15-minute quiz on Friday at the end of class.

The directions for the following page-13 problems do not say to solve the systems. But solving the systems completely would be good exercise.

ProblemResult
1.1: 27One solution (integers)
1.1: 28Many solutions (get a formula in terms of t)
1.1: 29No solutions
1.1: 30One solution
1.1: 31One solution
1.1: 32One solution
1.1: 33Where do these three lines cross?
1.1: 34Many solutions (formula!)
1.3: 4Many solutions (get a formula in terms of u and v)

Let's try this for a while. If nothing else, it will be good hunting for extra-credit points. Subsequent entries will likely not be so detailed as the day-one entry.
