Assignment #5 (Due Thursday, 10/6/05)
Posted: Mon Oct 3 13:50:26 MDT 2005
The assignment, informally given out on Thursday, 9/29/05, in class, is to do problem 20, page 37, of the current calculus text:
Calculus: Early Transcendentals
Fifth Edition
by
James Stewart
I suggest that you
  1. look at a scatter plot of the data
  2. think about how you will show "diminishing returns": either
    • less and less improvement in emissions per additional dollar spent OR
    • additional reductions cost more and more.
  3. think about which of the data will lie on the horizontal axis and which on the vertical
  4. find a least-squares cubic for these data points
  5. plot the cubic and the data points together on one plot
  6. with reference to the plot, write a brief prose explanation of where and how "diminishing returns" begins to show up on the plot.
