Assignment #35 (Due Tuesday, 7/26/05)
Posted:
Thu Jul 21 17:45:09 MDT 2005
Here are
important problems on Integration by
Substitution.
You want to be real with this method in the
first few days of MATH-175.
Section 5.5 has lots of "indefinite integrals" to
use to train your eye -- examples 1 - 6 take you
through this pretty well.
For "definite integrals" be sure to get with the
rule at the top of page 418. Right now, we are
oriented around evaluating "definite integrals", that
is, we are trying to find the correct numeric value.
You don't actually need the page-418 rule to find the
right number.
Later on, we'll be interested in using the page-418
rule to transform an integral to a different form, in
hopes of seeing some relationship or having an easier
computation (see 5.5: 75 -- also 79, 80, 81, 84).
- 5.5: 1-21 odds
- 5.5: 49-69 odds via the page-418 rule
(your instructor is really hep on this)
- 5.5: 23-47 odds
Make sure you've grokked and tried the page-418
rule.

- 5.4: 45-51 odds -- displacement analogs
and units
- 5.4: 53, 54 -- displacement versus distance
travelled.
