List of Homework Assignments (with Academic Deadlines and Exam Dates)

I will record assignments in this space in the online version.

Monday, Jan. 14: chapter 1 (p. 11): problems 2,4,6,8. section 2.1 (p. 20): problems 4, 8, 12, 14, 18, 20, 28. Due Wednesday.

Tuesday, Jan. 15: section 2.2 (p. 30): problems 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17, 18, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35, 38, 39. There are solutions to odd problems in the back of the book.

Wednesday, Jan 16: No new assignment.

Friday, Jan 18: section 2.3, 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, 29, 30. Note that half of these are odd problems. There is a typo in problem 10 -- see the list of typos on my page.

Monday, Jan 21:
MLK day holiday - no classes! After Saturday the 19th, instructor permission required to add a class.

Tuesday, Jan. 22: No new assignment. 2.2 assignment due.

Wednesday, Jan 23: section 2.4: 1-6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28-31. This assignment will be due Monday. Please note that I am delaying 2.3 due date to Friday.

Friday, Jan 25: section 2.5 assignment to appear in this space (didn't happen). 2.3 assignment due.

Monday, Jan. 28: section 2.5: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 23, 26. Due Friday (I will still be talking about 2.5 tomorrow). 2.4 assignment due.
Add deadline. Last day to register, add classes, change classes, or drop without receiving a W.

Tuesday, Jan. 29: No new assignment -- further discussion of section 2.5.

Wednesday, Jan 30: section 2.6: 1, 2, 5, 6, (do each method with just one step size, not two) 9, 10, 15, 16 (in 15 and 16, use the Runge-Kutta method with just one step size).

Friday, Feb. 1: section 2.5 assignment due. I'm thinking about meeting in the Maple lab.

Monday, Feb. 4: 3.2 assignment: 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17, 18, 21, 22, 25, 26. I will probably assign a few more problems from the applications -- watch this space. I am not saying when this is due yet.

Tuesday, Feb. 5: 2.6 assignment due.

Wednesday, Feb. 6: 3.1: 1,4,7,8,13,14,38,39,41. These should be straightforward, I hope.

Friday, Feb. 8:
Test 1 Test 1 will cover chapters 1 and 2 only (1.1--2.6).

Monday, Feb. 11: 3.2 application problems: 39, 40, 41. Add to this a couple of the Euler equations: 32, 33.

Tuesday, Feb. 12: 3.1 assignment due.

Wednesday, Feb. 13: 3.2 assignment due (from Feb. 4).

Friday, Feb. 15: 3.3: 25-32 (method of undetermined coefficients -- I'll be happy to discuss the odd ones in class). Please notice that there is a second 3.3 assignment listed under Feb. 19 (method of variation of parameters).

Monday, Feb. 18:
President's Day holiday - no classes!

Tuesday, Feb. 19: 3.2 application problems and Euler equation examples due.

Makeup for exam, replacing problems 2,3,8. The makeup will be one half hour at the beginning of the period; please show up on time. No calculators or integral tables will be available -- practice your integration! The makeup cannot lower your test grade, and will count as a homework assignment for anyone who takes it, regardless of whether their test grade is affected.

second 3.3 assignment: 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14 (method of variation of parameters).

Wednesday, Feb. 20:

Friday, Feb. 22: first 3.3 assignment due (the undetermined coefficients problems). I'm leaving the due date for the other set open for now.
This is the drop deadline. You will not usually be able to drop any class after this date.

Monday, Feb. 25: Section 3.4, problems 3,6,7,8,10,13,15,19,21,28 (in 28, it is OK to just solve the equation for the given values of the constants).

Tuesday, Feb. 26: More discussion of section 3.4...

Wednesday, Feb. 27: 3.3 second problem set due

Friday, Mar. 1: 3.4 problem set due

Monday, Mar. 4: 3.5: 1,2,9,10,17,18,26,27,28,31,32,33. This assignment is due Wednesday. I handed out a set of practice test problems today -- if you haven't got one, come by my office.

Tuesday, Mar. 5: 3.6: do problems 1-6. Do each method but with just one step size. I'll give some computer exercises later which are fancier.

Wednesday, Mar. 6: 3.5 problem set due.

Friday, Mar. 8:
Test 2 covering chapter 3.

Monday, Mar. 11: 4.1: 4,5,7,9,10,12,14,16,17,20,22,23,25,27,28.

Tuesday, Mar. 12: 3.6 problem set due.

Wednesday, Mar. 13:

Friday, Mar. 15: 4.3: 1,2,5,6,7,8,19,20,21,22 The next thing we will do is undetermined coefficients problems from 4.2. I list them here but they are not yet assigned: 24,25,27,28,29.

Monday, Mar. 18: 4.1 problem set due

Monday, Apr. 1: 4.2: 9,10,15,16; 4.4 1-4,9-12,24,25,29,30,31,32 (I will not ask for any 3-dimensional pictures on the exam!)

Tuesday, Apr. 2: 4.5: 1-4 (by hand suggested, use only one step size for each method); 17-20 (exact solution by hand, use Maple for numerical stuff).

Wednesday, Apr. 3: 4.2 24,25,27,28,29 due.

Friday, Apr. 5:
Test 3

Monday, Apr. 8: 6.1: 15, 16, 21, 22, 26, 28, 29, 33, 34.

Tuesday, Apr. 9:

Friday, Apr. 12: outstanding ch. 4 homework due.

Monday, Apr. 15: section 6.1 due. 6.2: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, (in problems 9 and 10, do compute the Laplace transforms of the indicated functions by one of the methods illustrated in class) 15, 16, 27, 28, 29, 30. due Friday.

Tuesday, Apr. 16: 6.3: 1, 2, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 24. due Monday.

Wednesday, Apr. 17: official due date of computer lab (this is somewhat flexible). Turning in the computer lab will also give free check-off for 4.4, 4.5.

Friday, Apr. 19:

Tuesday, Apr. 23: 5.1 9-13, 17, 22

Wednesday, Apr. 24: 6.3 due today

Wednesday, May 1: 5.2 due. 5.3: 1-4, 7-10, 13, 14, 17, 18, 21, 22-25.

Test 4

Monday, May 6: 7.1: 1, 4, 6 (in these, the objective is to write the sum in some sensible way. You will need to change variables in some cases), 9, 10 (again, write it in a sensible way), 17, 19, 22, 26, 27, 30.

Last day of classes.

Monday, May 13:
