Class meetings:
1215 to 1400 every Tuesday and Thursday in room MG136.

Textbook:
Introduction to the Practice of Statistics (sixth edition) by Moore, McCabe, and Craig.

Office hours:
Monday and Wednesday: 1330 to 1430.
Tuesday and Thursday: 1400 to 1500. Other times by appointment.

Computer:
We will regularly use the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program. Also, The textbook comes with a CD which provides many of our data sets.

Academic honesty:
All students are expected to be familiar with and adhere to the policies and standards given in the BSU Student Code of Conduct.

Cell phones, paging devices, etc.:
If, during class, your cell phone, paging device, etc., makes a noise that I can hear, your score on the next test or exam will be reduced by five points. If such a noise occurs and no one admits to being responsible for it, then this penalty will be applied to the entire class.

Late work and/or extensions:
If you seek an extension on graded work and the request occurs after the due date or time, your request will be summarily denied (except in the most extraordinary circumstances). Such requests that occur before the due date and time will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Contesting grades:
If you think I have graded you unfairly on a particular assignment, you must bring this to my attention within a week from the time that the assignment was returned to the class. After a week I will not consider any requests to review and possibly change my grading.

Grading policy:
Your grade will be determined by your performance in three areas:

Three tests (30%) -- Tests will occur during regular class meeting times on 19 February, 19 March, and 30 April. Collaborative work is not permitted on tests. For each test, each student is required to supply a blank (large-size) "blue book" for his/her written work. A week before each test, each student needs to give me a blank blue book.

- Test 3
  - Test 3 cheat sheet
  - Test 3 in-class portion
  - No take-home portion for Test 3
Homework (40%) -- Homework will be assigned and collected on a regular basis. Although collaborative work on homework is encouraged, each student must hand in his/her own homework paper. Failure to hand in homework on time will result in its not being graded.

Final exam (30%) -- 12 May, 1300-1500. Collaborative work is not permitted on the final exam. The discussion above about blue books pertains also to the final exam, with the exception that each student will have to supply two blank blue books for the final exam.
Your grade will be computed via the following algorithm. Let x be the number of points accumulated throughout the semester (between 0 and 100):

A+: x > 97
A: 93 < x < 97
A-: 90 < x < 93
B+: 87 < x < 90
B: 83 < x < 87
B-: 80 < x < 83
C+: 77 < x < 80
C: 73 < x < 77
C-: 70 < x < 73
D: 60 < x < 70
F: x < 60

Because this is a Boise State "core course", I am required to include in this syllabus three goals (or measurable outcomes) that I, as your instructor, have for you. They are:
- Students will be able to solve a single problem in more than one way.
- Students will read a data table and be able to extract meaningful information from it.
- Students will express their thoughts in proper written English, using full sentences (and paragraphs).
