Daily work:
This course is organized around cooperative learning in small groups.
You are expected to read the text on a daily basis so that you can arrive
in class with a good foundation to begin working on exercises that I will
assign.
During a typical class period, you will discuss with your group what
you have read, work on the assigned exercises, and clearly and neatly write
up your solutions to the exercises. At the end of each class, each group
will hand in written work that represents the effort of the entire group.
Because I want you to work thoroughly and carefully, there is no penalty
for not finishing all of the assigned exercises. However, my philosophy
is that good performance on all the in-class exercises should translate
into good performance on the take-home quizzes, tests, and the final exam.
Thus there is motivation for working all the in-class exercises, irrespective
of whether you hand them in.
Grading policy:
Your grade will be determined by your performance in four areas:
-
Three tests (30%) -- Tests will occur during regular class meeting
times on 22 September, 27 October, and 1 December. Collaborative work on
tests is not permitted.
-
Quizzes (35%) -- All quizzes are take-home and will be assigned
and collected on a weekly basis (except those weeks when tests occur).
Although collaborative work on quizzes is encouraged, each student must
hand in his/her own quiz paper.
-
Daily work (10%) -- Because a significant part of the learning process
of this course will occur by having the students work in small groups during
class time, attendance and participation are essential. You are expected
to be an active and productive member of the groups to which you are assigned.
-
Final exam (25%) -- Thursday, 17 December, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Collaborative work on the final exam is not permitted.
Your grade will be computed via the following algorithm. Let x be
the number of points accumulated throughout the semester (between 0 and
100):
