This page is for all students enrolled in a NON-TV section of
Math 025 or Math 108 on the BSU campus.
ALL class sessions for the sections listed below will be held in
MG 115 and 119 in the Math/Geoscience building or in the Math Learning Center (across University Dr. from Math/Geo)
at their regularly scheduled day and time. A minimum of another 6-8 hours a week should be spent in the Math Learning
Center open lab or on the My Math Lab course website studying material for the course, working on
homework assignments online, or taking online quizzes (see details in subsequent
paragraphs).. Note: for a 3 hour course, such as math 025, a student should plan on a minimum of 9 hours of study
time each week.. For a 4 credit course, such as math 108,a student should plan on a minimum of 12 hours of study
time each week.
Focus Group meetings are held in MG 119 for both Math 108 and Math 025 sections.
BRING your text to your first
scheduled class session. The course requires a custom text (paper cover), available only through the
BSU bookstore. There is an "access code" software license for the My Math Lab software that
is included with the text at no charge. Also included with the text is a booklet of Worksheets for Lab Practice.
Use the book as a workbook, one to write notes in, add sample problems to, etc.
#1) Watch the Orientation Video
Watch the Orientation Video for your Math 025 or Math 108 course online. To find the video orientation for your course,
click on the appropriate course homepage under the Math Learning Center submenu on the menu at the left of this page,
then click on the hyperlink for the Video Orientation. This video is a guide to the study materials accompanying your text and
available on campus. The video provides information on how to gain access to the weekly homework and weekly homework quizzes in your
course.
#2a) IF you are creating an account in MyMathLab for the first time, you will
need an ACCESS CODE (from your text) and a COURSE ID
(found under the course homepage) to create your account in MyMathLab. On your course homepage (link to it via the Math Learning
Center submenu on the menu at the left of this page), there is a video guide to creating your first-time account in MyMathLab.
#2b) IF you already have an account in MyMathLab for a course using our current text,
you only need a COURSE ID (found under the course homepage) to add a class to your exising
account. On your course homepage above, there is a video guide to adding a class to an existing account in MyMathLab.
#3) You will need to take the Orientation Quiz (found under the Homework button) in your MyMathLab account and get a 100%
on that quiz to be able to access your homework for Math 025 or Math 108. There are an unlimited number
of attempts on the Orientation Quiz and you may start any time after you have created your MyMathLab account. (You may watch the
Orientation Video any number of times.)
#4) Class meetings, called Focus Groups, will be held in MG 119, in the Math/Geoscience
building.
ATTEND the first session of your class for your instructor's
orientation to the course.
On Monday, the first Day of the semester, instructors will be on duty in the Math Learning Center (1406 Chrisway Dr, behind
the Gateway Center) and can help you create your account in MyMathLab or answer other
questions about the hybrid course. Regular hours for the MLC begin on Tues, Jan 22.
Both Math 025 (Beginning Algebra) and Math 108 (Intermediate Algebra)
courses will be using a text by Lial, Hornsby, and McGinnis. This
text will be used in conjunction with a software package called MyMathLab. Students
will meet with their instructor one day a week in Focus Group and for
the other 8 hours a week in 025 or the other 11 hours a week in 108 students will be
using the text for study and practice as well as the web-based software with
the Task Lists available on the MLC web page for a guide. There
are video lectures (about 15-20 min) on every section of the text, a version of the text with
multimedia features such as animated and/or video examples and pop-up vocabulary
boxes may be used for study, and any set of past homework may be accessed
for practice through the student's own online gradebook. The MLC
is open 77 hours each week, some time on every day of the week, with
instructors present to help students with questions from the text or
online. All
students enrolled in a hybrid section may get help from any instructor
on duty.
Students will be working assigned homework sets
online, this allows for immediate feedback. An online homework set
is assigned each week of the semester. The homework sets
include self-help tools such as a worked-out example of a similar
problem,
or links to the appropriate part of the text, etc. Each week
there
is also a homework quiz assigned, online, for course credit. Access
to the
homework quiz will occur when a score of 85% or better has been
obtained on the
week's homework. The homework quiz questions are taken from the
week's homework
questions. The goal is to be able to work the quiz questions,
without
help, as a way to prepare for the paper and pencil exams in the
course. (Each quiz may be taken twice, the better grade is used
for course grade computation)
The Math Learning Center (1406 Chrisway Dr) is staffed with lab instructors,
familiar with the math course software, at all times the MLC is open..
There are 67 computers in the
MLC and space for about 12 laptops. The MLC is open to all students
in math 025/108 hybrid courses (sections listed above) and Knowledge Network
courses. The computers in the MLC are loaded with all the necessary programs to run the web-based MyMathLab
software.
Since MyMathLab is a web-based software, students may work
from home on any PC computer with highspeed internet access rwecommended for the videos.
(Macs with OS 10.3, 10.3x and 10.4 may also be used, see the
Support tab on the CourseCompass homepage for details.) The
web-software does require the use of some small software packages that must be loaded on
any computer a student is using. These plug-ins are free and are
available through the MyMathLab site to download. The plug-ins
only
need to be loaded once on any particular computer a student is planning
to use in conjunction with MyMathLab. If
a student chooses to use more than one computer, each computer will need
to have the small plug-in programs loaded before all features of MyMathLab
will operate successfully. Even though it may seem convenient to
work "at home," you may find a mix of time spent in the MLC with help
available, and time spent at home for practice will be necessary for your
success. If you run into difficulties with the web-based software
at home, please plan to use the MLC where the computers will be maintained
by a systems administrator in the building.
There are unit tests (modules) and a comprehensive final exam
for each of the courses. Use of the on-screen calculator in
Windows will be allowed on unit tests and a student may bring any
(non-online) calculator to the final exam.
We look forward to helping you have a successful journey through Elementary
and/or Intermediate Algebra. The course homepages have specific schedules
for the optional campus lectures and the schedule for the Knowledge Network
TV course on campus, these are additional resources you may use for lecture
time.
Any student enrolled in the hybrid course sections of math 025 and math
108 enumerated above is welcome. (Students may also attend the
Knowledge
Network sections of math 025 MWF 10:40 am, or math 108 MTWF 11:40 am in
SMTC 118.)
See you at the MLC!! We are on Chrisway Dr, behind the Gateway
Center, across the street from the Wellness Center.
