The Gilbert and Sullivan Parody Archive Dream or Lovers and Madmen By Robert Wilsmore The Show
Based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Dream takes the form of a G&S operetta and the style of the modern musical combining them to produce a show rich in lyricism, harmony and humour. Dream was commissioned by the Three Counties Musical Society to celebrate their tenth anniversary and premiered in November 1998 at the Derby Guildhall Theatre. It was specially written to suit the needs of modern operatic and musical society and, in particular, those looking for an alternative to Gilbert and Sullivan. It is in two acts with a finale at the end of each, there are opening men’s and ladies’ choruses, double choruses, solos, duets, ensembles, and patter songs. Central to the success of Dream is the prominence of the four part chorus, who are involved throughout the show as ‘not so very dainty’ fairies, as wedding guests and as the actors who perform the play of ‘Pyramus and Thisby’ at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta.
