J. W. Beckwith was a principal staff member with The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. He started in 1881 as Business Manager of one of the traveling companies, and served in that post through 1884. His next stint with the company was with the principal company in London, which lasted from 1893 through 1908. During that period he is variously listed as Business Manager, Assistant Manager, and Acting General Manager in the records of the company performances.
