Abbotts Langley
Abbots Langley in Hertfordshire is twenty miles from
London, between Watford, St. Albans, and Hemel Hempstead.
The Gilbert & Sullivan Society was formed in February 1951 by the local vicar,
the Reverend Raymond S. Wilkinson. Arriving as the new incumbent at the Church of
St Lawrence the Martyr in Abbots Langley in 1950, he wasted no time in assembling members
of the St Lawrence choir and other local singers in a production of The pirates.
The production was a tremendous success, and further productions followed on a regular basis.
