The mathematics education group currently consists primarily of three faculty members, Sharon Walen, Margaret Kinzel, and Cynthia Hernon. While their research interests are broadly focused in mathematics education and on teacher preparation and training, they each bring special expertise in a variety of areas. Research areas include affective issues in the teaching and learning of mathematics, collaborative professional learning, communication and justification of mathematical ideas, and the understanding and use of algebraic notation. The group, both collaboratively and individually, has had articles accepted in international journals. Mathematics education faculty also advocate and suport the use of technology in mathematics education within the department and by classroom teachers.
Within the department there is support for and interest in mathematics education issues. Kathy Rohrig is currently participating with the group in an interview study focused on students' interpretation and use of mathematical definitions in an upper-division anaylsis course; other faculty members have expressed interest in similar collaborative efforts.
The department offers a bachelor's degree in Mathematics-Secondary Education, as well as an M.S. in Mathematics Education.
