Riemann and his Zeta Function

Peter Zvengrowski

University of Calgary, Canada

Abstract

This talk is intended as an elementary introduction to the Riemann zeta function and the related Riemann Hypothesis. Much of it will be from an historical perspective, e.g. we will attempt to ask and (possibly) answer questions such as " how much did Riemann actually know about the RH?" and "did he consider it very important?" The developments since Riemann's 1859 paper will also be discussed, as well as some recent research of the author.
